The Canfields were an average family from Oregon. In 2015, they moved to Africa to help run a mission hospital in southern Ethiopia. Things did not go as they planned. This book is a chronicle of their adventures. It's filled with stories about baboons, donkeys, diarrhea, spiders, fire ants, hyenas, soccer, amazing coffee and spicy food; the record of an American family trying to live by faith in Africa, and the very funny, often strange, things that happened as a result.

I really appreciated Brad's honest, funny, humble perspective on his family's journey and time in Africa. This book really took me in and kept me turning the pages to see what adventure and experience they would face next. I have a better understanding of what some missionaries may face.Product details

We Don't Have Spiders Here Stories of an American family living in Africa Brad Canfield 9781521394052 Books Reviews
This book is as funny and sad as life itself. I hope everyone reads this book. Not just missionaries or people seriously considering missions work, but everyone. There is a tendency to think that we missionaries are cut from a different cloth. Brad Canfield destroys this myth. Ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges and feeling in over our heads is something everybody faces, but something that missionaries live with all their lives. I hope members of missions committees read this book. It will help them pray for us. I hope pastors read this book, they will see the need to support missionaries in every way, spiritually, emotionally and financially. Missionary families need propping up — support. I hope all future missionaries read this book to give them a more realistic picture of what the first years are like on the field. Highly recommended. For everyone.
Loved this book! Looking forward to your next book Brad!
Amazing story by a very good writer!!!! Highly recommend it for anybody thinking of doing missionary work!
Hilarious. Honest. Witty. Refreshing.
What an interesting look into the African culture through the eyes of this family. This book had more laugh out loud moments than anything I’ve read this year and yet also caused me to think on a deeper level than most.
Brad Canfield has a gift with words and insight.
This is an honest and inspiring account of a family who followed their dreams to serve through medical missions in Africa. Along the way, they discover as much about themselves as the people they hoped to help.
Not only do I believe this book should be a must read for anyone heading into mission work, this book should be a must read by any of us who know, love and support those who are out working in missions. Brad Canfield is a gifted storyteller! His honesty and his transparency in the realities of moving your family and your life to a country that is so radically different from everything you have known was refreshing, enlightening, heartbreaking and hilarious, all tucked into one fantastic book!
