In a world ruled by monsters and men, Zayda may be our only hope.
The Turning Volume 1 AL Noble 9780692854716 Books
Another great addition to the post-apocolyptic dystopia seeking a future utopia genre. The best description is to think The Stand meets The Hunger Games meets The Walking Dead. However, this isn't like Orwell using Zamyatin's We for 1984 or Disney using Hamlet for the Lion King. Like every author, Noble uses inspiration from other stories, but The Turning is a fresh and intriguing take on theme. This is the start of a coming to age story of Zayda who has had to grow up too fast in a world that is still dealing with the aftermath a plague that wiped out most of the population. Too many books in this genre forget to tell enough of the back story to help us understand the present situation. The author doesn't make this mistake and as we move forward through Zayda's eyes, the story of the old world and what happened remains a key theme. By the end of the first book, we understand the past world as well as Zayda does, but no more. In fact, Noble does a fantastic job of staying within the narrative of Zayda and never gives us more than what Zayda knows at any point throughout the first installment. While this was frustrating to the many questions I had about various things occurring, it drew me into the narrative to learn about the world that exists for Zayda. Every scene gives a little bit more of an understanding to that world and a hope for the possible utopia Zayda and her friends seek. I do wish we got to know some of the supporting cast a little better, but there are future installments of the series to fill in those details.
However, the story isn't all tulips and daffodils. There is enough intrigue, betrayal, switching alliances and surprises in the story to keep any reader on the edge of their reading chair and wanting to turn to the next page. You feel the excitement, fear, and disappointment just as Zayda experiences these emotions. I actually felt depressed when Zayda passed by what I assume to be (spoiler alert) Cafe Du Monde in the Old City and knowing her love of beignets. Of course, this probably comes from my own love of beignets.
I read the book over a couple of days on a fly fishing/camping trip. At one point, I actually found myself debating whether to head out for some afternoon fly fishing or keep reading. While I did choose fly fishing and to finish reading by the campfire that evening, this is not a debate I ever have when I am on a trout fishing trip. However, the book is that good.
If you're fan of this genre, this is a must-read by a new author. Read this book now so that when it comes to the big screen in the future, you can brag to your friends that you read the book before A.L. Noble became the popular author she is destined, based on the quality of her first book, to become.

The Turning Volume 1 AL Noble 9780692854716 Books Reviews
It was a great storyline, lots of twists and excitement. I didn't want to put it down. Can't wait for the book.
My favorite genre. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Great book by a great new author. I can't wait for the next installment!
Well-written engaging the reader on every page. A fresh look on a popular idea. A real page-turner and quick read. Leaves you wanting more! Keep an eye out for more from this emerging author.
I was immediately drawn into the story and wanted to find out what would happen next. I ended up reading the whole book in 2 days! I'm hoping that the sequel comes out soon. I enjoy the zombie genre, and this was a fresh take.
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend. When I first picked it up, it seemed similar to other books/stories that I was familiar with. It quickly developed into a story so unique, that I was at page 100 before I first put it down. Just when I thought that I had things figured out, a twist changed the dynamic of the story. The character development was intriguing, the story was at the correct pace, and the book was fun to read. I am looking forward to the second volume to see how things play out. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a good read.
A vivid and achingly internal view of one girl's fight for escape from a dystopian society, not just for herself, but all who have survived the aftermath of the virus that wiped out much of an old world she's only heard about. When the consequences become even more personal, and the life Zayda's known is torn apart as well, she is forced to begin the mission for which she seems destined.
I read this quickly as I looked forward, sometimes with one eye open, to finding out what was to become of Zayda and both those she's trusted, and those she doubts.
While growing up is hard enough, Zayda's determination to be able to do just that in this world of secrets, betrayal, danger, and longing turn each page for the reader. The setting is so detailed that I both longed to visit, and felt a bit leary of NOLA.
It's difficult to believe this is a debut effort as I already eagerly anticipate the books and movies to follow.
